Middle School Students Highlight FACS Class During Board Meeting

A group of middle school students recently explained what Family and Consumer Science is all about.  No small task for any child, but imagine doing this in front of your Board of Education.  These students had to volunteer for this undertaking.  The presentation began with Richard A. describing all he learned about hand stitching.  He even wore a sweater he had repaired himself.  Next came Carter S. who shared what was covered during the cooking portion of the class.  "Most of us didn't know anything about cooking.  Mrs. Knickmeyer let us choose recipes we liked, so we'd be more apt to try them.  The food we made was actually really good!" stated Carter.

Not only did students learn how to cook, they also made grape jam and pear butter.  The majority of these items were donated.  After the students learned about the process, they made and sold their products during the Bobcat Pride Car Show.  Riley L. and Abby B. explained the steps involved and shared that over $300 was raised to help fund the next semester of the class, and they sold every jar.

Katryna B. showed a scarf she knitted by hand.  She explained how they used larger sized knitting needles and yarn to make the process a little easier to learn.  The needles were hand crafted by Mrs. Knickmeyer's father.  Finally, Grace M. talked about how she knew nothing about a sewing machine and could now name every part and create items such as pillows and curtains. "In this class we not only learned knowledge, we learned skills we will use forever," the students shared.  We are very proud of Mrs. Knickmeyer and how she has taken this class to a new level.  Great job kids!
