5th Graders Complete DARE Program

Our 5th grade classes completed and graduated from the DARE Program on Thursday, April 4.  The program is geared toward helping young people avoid violence, substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco, and drugs), and other dangerous behaviors.  Our DARE program is headed by Corporal Harden of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.  Concerning how DARE has evolved, Harden recently stated, "D.A.R.E. used to be really drug-specific.  Now we get to teach kids to think for themselves and give them the power to be comfortable having their own mind and making their own decisions so when they’re in a drug situation, they can do that. We’re teaching them to make safe and responsible decisions overall.”  As part of the program, students are given a workbook to complete and complete an essay concerning Decision Making and Thinking For Yourself.  All of these students completed both portions of the program.

These young people were honored for their efforts during a graduation ceremony.  Several special awards were presented.  Brianna W. and Kylee B. received a gift certificate for going above and beyond in their workbook.  Peyton P. and Wyatt K. were runners up for the essay and receive a small DARE Lion.  Cadence C. and Triniti A. received the Narcotics Officer Award Medal.  Abby M. and Leah M. were chosen to have written the most outstanding essays and read their essays to a crowd of students, family, and friends.

After the ceremony students were treated to pizza from Finish Line Cafe and a skating party at Nothing Fancy Skating Rink.  Ms. Dooley and Mrs. Brendel are extremely proud of how hard the students worked to complete this program.  "We are really impressed with how well our kids did," stated Dooley.
